Welcome To Washington Gas

For 160 years Washington Gas has been distributing natural gas to customers in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. We bring natural gas to your home or business safely and reliably.

Understanding Your Bill

Billing Status

As a Washington Gas customer, you may buy your natural gas from Washington Gas, the utility, or you may buy your natural gas from a retail energy supplier. Either way, Washington Gas delivers the gas through our system of pipes to your business.

  • You are a Washington Gas Sales Service Customer if you buy your gas from Washington Gas.

  • You are a Washington Gas Delivery Service Customer if you buy your gas from a retail energy supplier.

Sales Service Customers receive one bill from Washington Gas. Delivery Service Customers may be billed as follows:

  • One bill, which combines Washington Gas charges and the energy supplier charge (this bill may be provided either by Washington Gas or by the supplier); or,

  • Two separate bills. Washington Gas sends the customer a bill for the System Charge, the Delivery Service Charge and applicable taxes. Your energy supplier sends you a bill for the gas.

Understanding Your Charges

Whether you are a Delivery Service customer or a Sales Service customer, you will find some of the following items listed on your gas bill:

  • CCF of Gas Used-the unit of measurement on your meter for the amount of natural gas used. One CCF is equal to 100 cubic feet of gas. There is a conversion factor for the heating value of the fuel and a converted usage figure, which is Total Therms.

  • Purchased Gas Charge (PGC)-the cost of the natural gas and the cost of transporting the gas to the Washington Gas system.

  • Distribution Charge-the cost of delivering the natural gas through our system to your residence or business.

  • System Charge-covers some costs of providing your service, including depreciation, taxes, maintenance and repair of customer lines, and customer-related expenses, such as meter reading and billing.

  • Taxes-are imposed by your local and state governments, and are collected and remitted to the appropriate taxing authorities.

  • Unmetered Gaslight-Older gaslights may be unmetered and are therefore billed at a fixed usage. A typical two-mantle gaslight consumes approximately 219 therms annually. If you turn an unmetered gaslight on or off, please let us know immediately so we can bill you correctly.
